Never before has a so high percentage of the web users spent time on Facebook and other social networks as on Christmas Eve.

2,18 % of US visits on the web on Christmas Eve went to Facebook, according to a report from Hitwise.  That is compared to a 1,48 % average in November.

The trend was even more clear in the UK, where one in 20 visits on Christmas Eve was to Facebook.

Hitwise concludes that social networks accounted for 1 in 10 UK web visits during the Christmas week, which is significantly higher than during the rest of the year.

But why is this? I think it proves how social networks like Facebook are becoming  an important part of people’s life. And in many countries Facebook has received a critical mass in the way that it has become a practical place to wish all your friends a Merry Christmas. To take myself as an example: I never got around to send out Christmas cards this year. But I did make sure to go to my Facebook profile to send all my best wishes to my friends.

And who needs Christmas cards anyway?  Today we have so many other ways to send our best wishes to friends and family.

More than anything else the statistics thus primarily demonstrate how big Facebook and similar networks has become, as MediaMemo points out.
