U.S. newspapers with record web audiences

Finally some good news for American newspapers: Never before have so many Americans visited newspaper web sites in the US.

- U.S. newspaper Web sites had more than 68.3 million unique visitors on average, and reached 41.4 percent of the U.S. online population in the third quarter, up 15.8 percent year-over-year, according to a custom analysis by Nielsen Online for the Newspaper Association of America.

These are the highest numbers since NAA started tracking the data in 2004.

This is great news for American newspapers.  Yet it also demonstrates how weak they still are on the web, especially if you compare with some European countries.

In Norway, for instance, the biggest newspaper – VG – each week reaches more than three millions of a total population of 4,5 million.

I am surprised why the newspaper sites do not have more traffic in the USA. European newspapers have a much stronger position, it seems to me.
